A 1/3.2" format imager such as Aptina MT9D111 has an imaging diagonal of 5.6mm. This is a popular format for high resolution imaging applications in a small form factor package. To cover the entire imager active area the lens image circle must be greater than the imager diagonal.  Download application note on imager circle vs. active area.
